A Decade of Asian Dramas

This year marks my tenth year of being an Asian drama fan. It's been a decade since Meteor Garden graced my television screen and spurred a passion in me to obsess over fictional worlds and characters unique to Asian dramas. Over the years the pile of fave dramas, fave actors and favorite genres have accumulated in my drawer of good stuff that I almost didn't notice that I've come back full circle to my predicament ten years ago. That is to wave the second male lead flag knowing he will never get the girl at the end. Yes, the second male lead syndrome is strong with me.

The way I rallied for Chilbongie (Yoo Yeon Seok) in Answer Me 1994 this year was similar to that of how I supported Hua Ze Lei (Vic Zhou) back in the good ole days. Both times I joined the nasty fan wars between ship and it was never a pretty sight. It's always a blood bath with fangirls (and fanboys?) acting like scorned housewives throwing insults at the other team like their lives depended on it. In the end, the winning team got the last laugh and the losing team huddled in one corner mending their broken hearts.

I didn't ask for this to happen, it just did. and what a way to mark a milestone in my fangirl life. But through all that, I learned that dramas come and go, what you feel at the heat of the moment will pass and at some point in the future you'd look back with a smile at the silliness of it all.

Watch a drama, spazz and pout all you want but don't forget to move on! There are lots of fishes in the ocean!

Happy New Year, dramaland!

  1. Omg. I'm so gonna follow you now. We are exactly the same. I started my Asian drama addiction with Meteor Garden too, though I did watch it in 2001 when it's first aired. My second lead syndrome isn't that strong though, especially when the lead is my fave actor. But when it's not the case, I mostly wave the second lead flag too. Btw, I love your opening no-calm-fangirl pic! LOL.
